Let’s be honest, July isn’t always romantic.
It’s damp socks, cracked knuckles, and the fourth night of leftover soup.
As someone who lives for garden blooms and open studio windows, I’ve had to learn how to get creative with inspiration - especially when everything feels grey and sleepy.
So, here’s how I really keep the spark alive when I’m running low on sunlight and high on cabin fever:
1. I Make a Beautiful Mess
When in doubt: wreck something gently.
I pull everything out of my studio cupboards, spread old candle labels across the table, dig out that half-used box of dried florals, and start playing.
No pressure. No products in mind. Just mood boarding with my hands.
Often, something wonderful appears - like a scent pairing I hadn’t thought of, or a floral palette that suddenly feels so this season.
2. I Plan for Spring Like It's a Royal Event
I treat spring like it’s the Queen’s arrival.
Garden sketches. New candle names. Floral wishlists. Mock wreath designs.
I make Pinterest boards titled “Her Majesty’s Spring Table” and write dramatic captions like “What would Beatrix Potter grow if she had a modern greenhouse?”
It’s silly and fun - but it works and keeps my ideas and creativity flowing.
3. I Eavesdrop on Nature
Okay, not literally. But kind of.
When the garden’s too soggy, I take to walking through nearby reserves and old streets.
I pay attention to what's still alive: lichen on trees, mushrooms bursting through bark, birds that didn’t migrate.
They whisper ideas.
4. I Say Yes to the Unexpected
Sometimes inspiration is hiding in the thing I didn’t plan for.
A last-minute custom order with odd colours.
A strange customer request.
An old fragrance sample I forgot I had ordered.
I used to resist those things. Now I lean in - they often lead me somewhere new creatively.
5. I Go Where the Light Is
Literally.
I follow the sun around the house like a cat.
I work next to the window. I write outside on the bistro set with a blanket and a tea.
I bring my products into natural light and look at them differently.
Everything looks better in sunlight - even your own ideas.
So if you're feeling flat this winter, maybe it’s not you. Maybe it’s just the season asking you to play differently.
What have you tried lately to shake off the fog?
Have you made a mess just for the joy of it?
Started planning spring outfits even though you're still wearing thermals?
